Installing Oracle 19c RAC on VirtualBox – silent installation – Part 1

Posted by Balazs Papp on 2020-04-05

Installing Oracle RAC can be quite a challenge for people new to Oracle databases because of the extra infrastructural requirements.
So here is a walkthrough for installing a 2-node Oracle RAC on a standard cluster, using VirtualBox (Oracle Linux 7 as guests), for “educational purposes”. Keep in mind, this is just a sandbox environment, so I kept the steps simple. In a real environment, we need to do better than here.
Some basic knowledge of Linux administration, networking and VirtualBox is required.
I prefer using the commandline for such installations (because it is much simpler to document the steps this way, instead of using screenshots), so prepare to see a lot of commands and their outputs, but no pictures at all.

18c Data Guard NOLOGGING options – Part 1: Introduction

Posted by Balazs Papp on 2019-01-05

In versions before 18c, when configuring Data Guard, the only option we had for the logging property of the databases other than the default, was enabling FORCE LOGGING as:

ALTER DATABASE FORCE LOGGING;

Starting with 18c, we have the following new options:

ALTER DATABASE SET STANDBY NOLOGGING FOR DATA AVAILABILITY;

or

ALTER DATABASE SET STANDBY NOLOGGING FOR LOAD PERFORMANCE;
